Infringement procedures against Italy’s illegal driftnetting

Today in Brussels, infringement procedures against Italy was officially announced; based on that Italy risks heavy court fines for its failure to stop large-scale illegal driftnet fishing. Driftnets were banned by the EU in 2002 following a former moratorium by the UN in 1992. At present, drift-netting still represents a metastasis for the Mediterranean Sea.
