whales up for sales: the controversy

Only a few days ago US researchers proposed the idea of tradable quotas for catching whales, as a possible solution to end commercial whaling, with the advantage that environmental groups to effectively buy whales in order to protect them from killing (see previous post save the whales? put them up for sales!). The proposal is controversial and among the many critics, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS), despite welcoming the discussions about how to end commercial whaling, strongly opposes such a proposal, questioning the researcher suggestions for both ethical and practical reasons.
