CV

I work for the Tethys Research Institute where I currently am Associate Researcher. December 2013 and December 2016 I have been a Member of the Board of Directors for the same Institute. I am, at present Principal Field Investigator and data analyst (since 2005) for the Cetacean Sanctuary Research project and Principal Field Investigator for the Ionian Dolphin project (starting in 2017).

My primary interests focus on marine ecosystems with an emphasis on marine mammals, including abundance and density estimation, acoustics, habitat use, telemetry and monitoring of large cetaceans migrations. Promoting public awareness and conservation is of particular importance, as well as the identification of key actions toward conservation and management of threats.

I have participated in several research projects in different areas of the Mediterranean Sea, The Baltic and the North Seas gaining knowledge in research methods including visual, acoustic and aerial surveys for cetaceans and spent about 1200 days in the field aboard oceanographic research vessels, sailing, motor and inflatable boats, and aircrafts.

Since 2009 I participate to extensive aerial surveys in the Central Mediterranean Sea aimed at assessing the presence of critical habitats for cetaceans and to estimate the abundance and density of cetacean populations and other megavertebrates in the Region. The study is conducted with the support of and in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Seas (MATTM), the International Whaling Commission (IWC),  and the Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA).

Between 2010 and 2011 I have worked on spatial modelling of cetacean in the waters of the Strait of Messina, Italy, to assess the potential risk associated to the construction of a suspended bridge over the Strait.

Lately, since 2012 I participated in satellite telemetry program for fin whales in the waters of the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals and in the Sicily Strait (Mediterranean Sea). The study is conducted with the support of and in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Seas (MATTM) and the International Whaling Commission (IWC),  the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS), the Pelagos Sanctuary, the Istituto Superiore per laProtezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA), the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the University of Siena and the Isole Pelagie Marine Protected Area.

During the summer of 2016 I have also served as and observer and data logger for the Small Cetaceans in European Atlantic waters and the North Sea (SCANS-III) project, a large-scale ship and aerial survey to study the distribution and abundance of cetaceans in European Atlantic waters. Specifically I have been involved in the data collection during aerial surveys carried out in a the Ger man Bight, the Baltic Proper, the Skagerrak and the Kattegat

I am proficient with several computer software packages including dedicated research applications, GIS packages and software for audio, video and image editing. From early 2012 I also am a certified JNCC Marine Mammal Observer (PAM), Passive Acoustic Monitoring Operator (PAM) and BOEM Gulf of Mexico Protected Species Observer (PSO). I have also collaborated with the Dolphin Biology & Conservation group. I am Italian mother tongue and I am fluent in English, have a good knowledge of French and basic knowledge of Spanish.
